Why this exists

I built this because I watched too many literary writers try to launch their Substacks using advice that wasn’t made for literary work. The hooks were too aggressive. The frameworks too commercial. The voice templates too flat. And the result, every time, was a Substack that felt slightly hollow like a writer trying on someone else’s coat.

A literary Substack is a different animal. It needs a different launch.

It needs a writer to know what world their work lives inside. What atmosphere it carries. What its through-lines are. What kind of reader it is reaching for, and what to call them. I cannot tell you what I will write about. I don’t always know until I sit down. Some nights it will be about a memory I haven’t visited in years. Some nights it will be a poem that arrived without warning. Some nights, it will be three sentences I need to set down before I can sleep.

What I can tell you is the shape of what will tend to live here.

And occasionally, short midnight notes before drifting off to sleep.

All I know is everything will appear when they appear. In the exact moments they are needed most.

Why I Write

I don’t write to be approved of. I don’t even write to be agreed with. I write because the words build up inside me and need somewhere to go, and the page is the only place that doesn’t flinch.

I write because sometimes I need to let my thoughts bleed through my fingertips, to find relief from the chaos and the longing and the things I cannot say out loud. If they resonate with someone else, if they find the one they were meant for, then I am grateful.

But I write either way.

I have been in love with words and the stories they weave since I was old enough to hold a pencil with intention. Stories scrawled in the backs of notebooks. Half-finished novels in shoeboxes. Letters I never sent. A whole inner life pressed into pages no one ever read, not even me, sometimes, until years later when I found them again. The writing is still figuring me out.

Where the writing that used to live only in margins gets to take up a whole page. Where the version of me that whispers in the dark gets to speak instead.

She’d spent far too long trying to be someone she wasn’t.

Finally tired of the charades, she pulled out the box of clothes from the back of her closet and put on an outfit from her past. When she looked in the mirror, she recognized herself for the first time in six years.

The tears were uncontrollable, a mixture of sadness and happiness. Bittersweet. Sadness for the woman she’d once been. Happiness that she’d finally made the step back to who she really was.

She decided it was time to sing again. She hadn’t sung a song since the day she’d walked away from the only one she thought she’d ever love. It was as though that day she’d allowed the music to die, along with the girl she once was.
